Perkins School - America’s first school for the blind - plays an important role in the history of blind education. More than 175 years ago, Perkins’ founders were committed to opening the doors to education, literacy and independence for people who are blind and deafblind.
Institutions for the Blind and Visually Impaired
The Government, its Ministries and various Departments, Institutions, Non-Government Organizations (NGO) etc. are working to support the lives, education, training, employment and livelihood of people with blindness and visual impairment. There are International Organizations, Government as well as private across the world, primarily in USA and Europe, that work for the blind that can be of assistance to the people with blindness and visual impairment in India. In India, DEPwD, GoI drives the activities of National Institutions and Regional Centers in different states. NGOs in India constantly supplement the support activities of the Government in India, and public and private Special Schools in India for the students with blindness and visual impairment educates the children.
