Corporate Jobs for PwDs
India Inc has become more conscious and proactive in hiring PWDs - thanks to the mandatory disclosures in annual reports and the Accessible India campaign. According to the annual report disclosures of the Nifty-50 companies analyzed by the ET Intelligence Group, 43 of the leading companies of India Inc together reported of employing 11,848 number of differently-abled people for the financial year 2019-20. This is 28% higher than the number of people with disabilities (PWDs) they employed in FY 2014-15. It is also encouraging that the count of companies disclosing the number of PWDs employed by them rose from 35 to 43 in these five years.
This positive growth is due to the push coming from RPwD Act, 2016, Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan) of the government and stricter enforcement of he law. Otherwise, as of 2015, only 10 Nifty companies were sensitive to the issue of employing PwDs, and were employing 90% of the 8,551 disabled employees working in the 50 companies in the index, according to data compiled by ETIG.
Several other companies - small, medium, and big - are also taking steps towards making their employee rolls more inclusive by hiring and retaining PwDs. Significant ones include Accenture India,, Capgemini, Costa Coffee, IBM India, ITC Hotels, Jubilant FoodWorks, KFC, SAP Lab India, and Tata Group (Titan Industries, Tanishq, Tata Motors).
India is a difficult place for disabled people to work. Its cities’ congested, uneven streets are impassable for many with physical problems. Disability often closes the door to educational and professional opportunities, even where it need not have done so. Some communities interpret Hindu scripture to suggest that disability is linked to sin, adding to the suffering. India’s 2011 census reported that 27m people — about 2 per cent of the population — were disabled, but campaigners say this is probably an underestimate, noting that the World Bank estimates the global rate of disability at 15 per cent.
Yet the country is home to entrepreneurs who are using business to give disabled Indians the chance of a livelihood — while proving to other recruiters that it is worth paying attention to this huge, largely untapped pool of labour.
Startups like Bollant, Mirakle Courier, and Vindhya e-Infomedia have taken very focused steps for inclusion of PwDs in the workforce.

Top Nifty Recruiters of PwDs in FY 2019-20

Background: disability and employment law
In 1977, after war in Bangladesh left India with huge numbers of injured servicemen, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ordered that 3 per cent of public-sector jobs should be reserved for disabled people.
That provision was enshrined in law in 1995 — but disability researchers say that it was far from enforced, with disabled workers marginalised in public and private sectors.
This has tempered expectations around the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016. The act raises the reservation to 4 per cent of jobs, of which a quarter should go to people with learning disabilities or victims of acid attacks.
In the private sector, meanwhile, companies with at least 20 employees are required to adopt a disability policy in writing. Discrimination against disabled workers is illegal, unless “appropriate to achieve a legitimate aim” — a proviso noted nervously by some disability advocates.
The maximum penalty for breach of the new law is a fine of Rs. 5,00,000.
Make It Safe for Employees to Disclose Their Disabilities, Laurie Henneborn, Harvard Business Review, 2021
An Accenture survey found that the vast majority of employees with disabilities don’t feel their workplace culture is fully committed to helping them thrive and succeed. This article offers five steps that organizations can take to make such disabilities feel so safe and included that they will be willing to disclose their conditions. And that’s important: The research found that employees who do disclose their disability at work are 30% more engaged — in terms of career satisfaction and aspirations, confidence, and a sense of belonging — than those who don’t.
Disabled Employees at Twice the Risk of Facing Work Abuse, Dr. Enozia Vakil, Medindia, 2013
Half of the disabled population in India employable: Report, TIE, 2021: India has almost 3 crore people with disability (PwD) of which around 1.3 crore is employable but only 34 lakh of them have been employed
Physically Handicapped Criteria for UPSC
The Union Public Service Commission provides various facilities to aspirants who are differently-abled in the form of age limit relaxations, reservation of certain posts and special provisions for exam centers. However, differently-abled people cannot apply to all of the services in the Civil Services. Let us see what posts are available for such candidates and what the criteria are to avail the benefits under the physically handicapped category in UPSC and the physically handicapped reservations.
Physically Handicapped Category
The Commission assigns a UPSC category code for different disabilities. The table on right lists the various codes that UPSC assigns for different categories of physical handicaps (PH) or disability eligible for the IAS exam.
The presence of any one or more of the conditions is defined as a disability by the UPSC. The commission updates this list based on advancements in medical technology and new categories may be added in the future. Aspirants should check the latest IAS notification for the same.
Civil Service Posts for Physically Handicapped Persons
Physical standards are set for each post. Below is a table summarizing the services with their list of physical requirements:
Persons with disabilities sometimes have to face issues in getting allotted to the service of their choice in spite of getting the rank because of the requirements of the nature of the service, but it is not impossible to get a good service for persons with disabilities.

Career Guidance and Placement Cell (CGP)

Placement is promoted through community job fairs, employer orientation, industrial orientation, field visits and pre-employment training.
(The) Association of People with Disability (APD), India
The Association of People with Disability (APD, India) is transforming the lives of underprivileged people with disability since 1959. Based in Bengaluru, Karnataka, we run extensive programs in rural and urban Karnataka to enable, equip and empower children and adults with a range of disabilities including locomotor, spinal cord injury, speech and hearing, cerebral palsy, and to some extent, mental issues. Till date, we have impacted 500,000+ lives of people with disability.
Livelihood Support for People with Disability
Despite the implementation of The Persons with Disability Act, 1995 (revised in 2016), people with disability (PwDs) struggle to get jobs. Presently, there are many skilled and semi-skilled jobs across industries that can be performed by PwDs. But there is a lack of awareness and sensitivity among recruiters, poor job-readiness of the PwDs themselves along with lack of awareness and training in required skills.
APD works to mobilize marginalized youth with disability, train them through formal and informal courses, and place them in jobs that are suitable to their qualification and ability. We also sensitize employers towards the needs of PwDs for an equitable work environment.
Training
Training is conducted based on the recommendations of the Placement team along with regular ongoing courses.
Foundation Course
Before any domain training PwDs lacking life-skills go through a 2-month foundation course, a unique job-readiness program from APD. The course involves skilling up on self-management, daily living, basic communication, calligraphy and English language, basic mathematics, sign language, and more.
The required PwDs receive therapy support as well as aids & appliances. All candidates can access government entitlement schemes such as pension, disability ID cards, transport passes and more.
Employer Led Training (ELT)
As part of this program, APD identifies candidates (through the recruitment unit) and provides them job-appropriate training for placement in the government or private sector. The curriculum is jointly developed with training partners, tailor-made to the needs of selected employers. The training period includes capacity building of the potential employers on a rights-based approach to recruitment, induction and mentoring, to promote a work culture that values diversity.
BPO ELT: Intensive 8-weeks on-the-job training (OJT) and practical sessions to enhance the candidates’ communication, computer, customer service and life skills.
Hospitality ELT: Intensive 8-weeks training for the hospitality industry, conducted in collaboration with training centres or academic institutions such as the Presidency College of Hotel Management and YUM Academy.
Retail ELT: Intensive 8-weeks training to equip trainees on communication, customer interaction, labelling and selling.

Family of Disabled (FoD)
Don't give them fish, teach them fishing
Based on the concept, Don't give them fish, teach them fishing, the ARS, which started in 1998, is one of the major projects of FOD. Under this scheme, disabled people who are illiterate, unskilled and poor with no opportunity of getting employed either in private or government sector, are economically rehabilitated by initiating them into a trade of their choice. This enables them to financially support themselves as well as their dependents.
ARS is aimed at alleviating poverty, reducing unemployment and mainstreaming people with disabilities. It also prevents them from falling prey to anti-social elements who exploit their disability to meet their nefarious goals.
Till date ARS has reached out to 994 poor disabled individuals, in and around Delhi, in gainful employment with the success rate of above 80%. We cater to all kinds of disabilities, though the majority of ARS entrepreneurs are physically disabled; hearing impaired, visually impaired and leprosy cured people.
FOD was conferred with the prestigious Helen Keller Award 2003 exclusively for this service on December 2, 2003, the eve of World Disabled Day and Red & White Bravery Award on March 31, 2004 for its exceptional act of social courage.
FOD advertises vacancies through its website and www.devnetjobsindia.org
Send your CV at: contact@familyofdisabled.org
FOD provides equal opportunity; it does not discriminate against any person with regard to age, color, creed, national origin, disability or gender. Decisions on employment are based on an individuals qualifications as related to the position for which s/he is being considered.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated every year on 3rd December since 1992. Proclaimed and promoted by the United Nations, this international observance is marked the world over to intensify efforts aimed at sustained effective action with a view to improving the situation of persons with disabilities. For India which is home to over 70 million people with disabilities, with few rights, few entitlements, and even fewer opportunities, this day assumes a greater significance, creating visibility and awareness on the issues faced by people with different disabilities before a larger audience.
On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities’21, NCPEDP plans to launch its ambitious ‘Missing Millions Campaign’ through it would like to continue its advocacy work, initially for a period of three years.
What does the campaign do?
Disability is almost always largely absent from data & statistics and monitoring mechanisms. The invisibility of persons with disabilities in the mainstream development narrative has ‘resulted in development interventions unintentionally leaving out persons with disabilities. Policy makers and practitioners tend to leave out persons with disabilities due to the unavailability of data.
The UN Expert Group on Disability Data and Statistics, Monitoring and Evaluation finds that ‘data disaggregated by disability in all areas will be essential to ensure progress is measured and persons with disabilities are not left behind in future mainstream development programmes.
NCPEDP’s Missing Million Campaign will implement a national advocacy and awareness-raising campaign across India through the activities which will equally focus on Urban and Rural regions of the country.

Envisioning a career without barriers

Accenture plc
"When we eliminate the barriers to socio-economic inclusion of Persons with Disabilities, we create a safe environment where everyone feels they belong."
- Sanjay Dawar, Managing Director & Lead – Capability Network, Global Network (Argentina, India & Poland) & Strategy
A billion reasons for disability inclusion
The program for inclusion of disabled in the workplace is our way to create a world where everyone feels like they belong.
We are committed to accelerating equality for all and to creating an inclusive, accessible workplace that supports our Accenture persons with disabilities (PwD). And our commitment starts at the top. We create a barrier-free culture that promotes disability inclusion in the workplace. This enables our PwD to bring their unique skills, talents and strengths to contribute and thrive in the workplace.
When we remove barriers—of the mind and in the workplace—we make the world more accessible for everyone. The latest technologies, tools and training help our PwD perform at their full potential. And our strong network of 36,000+ PwD Champions in 52 countries brings our people, allies and friends together to collaborate.
In India, our 6,000+ PwD Champions actively participate in programs and events that engage, celebrate and raise awareness about PwD. Together, we’re enabling change for our people with visible and invisible disabilities.
Inclusion through Indian Sign Language
One of the many ways through which we can drive disability inclusion is how we choose to converse with each other. Learning a new language is a great way to foster inclusive conversations among our peers. For us languages are not just a means of communication through words, locally or internationally but also non-verbal messages through the sign language. We invite you to join us as we learn the Indian Sign Language (ISL) which will in turn lead to deeper human connections amongst us.
Since 2010, Accenture India has been running the ‘Skills to Succeed’ initiative in India. The programme empowers persons with disabilities, who receive training in the skills needed in some high-demand job sectors, namely – business process outsourcing, hospitality and facilities management, retail, construction and micro-enterprise.
The company has a network called ‘PwD Champions Network’ that includes PwD employees & their supporters known as ‘Champions’. All its facilities are accessible by PwDs.
Accenture also provides business cards printed in Braille to all its inclusion and diversity sponsors to sensitize and impact people. In the workplace, it encourages reasonable modifications to a job or the work environment to ensure that a qualified individual with a disability has rights and privileges equal to those of employees without disabilities.

Amazon
Over the years, Amazon has been relentlessly disrupting the workplace with initiatives to bring the disabled community into its workforce. Leveraging its technology and innovation infrastructure, Amazon is creating opportunities for these individuals throughout its network, empowering them with financial independence, and helping them realize their true potential.
From a pilot to a countrywide phenomena
In April 2017, Amazon piloted an initiative designed to create opportunities for persons who are deaf in its Fulfilment Centre (FC) in Hyderabad. The pilot started with a handful of deaf associates, who were trained to pack shipments at the FC. This initiative has now rapidly expanded to more than eight cities including Bangalore, Chennai, Indore, Mumbai, Pune, and Hyderabad.
More than 350 associates with speech and hearing disability are part of the Amazon network across the country’s Fulfilment Centers, Sortation Centers, and Delivery Stations. NGOs like Youth4Jobs and v-shesh provide valuable support and resources to Amazon in this D&I initiative. The associates at the FC work in various process paths mapped to the nature of the job and their skill set. Amazon - in partnership with partner NGOs - trains the associates with the help of interpreters to help them understand their role and perform at par. Further, every deaf associate is assigned to either an interpreter or a fellow associate buddy, who assists them with select tasks. Processes and mechanisms have also been established to create a good and safe work environment for these associates.
Project Sakshyam – extending the impact to Sortation Centers
Having worked with the deaf associates at Fulfilment Centers for more than a year, Amazon India knew that it was time to extend the programme and drive positive impact in a much larger scale. Over 2018, the company has on-boarded more than 50 deaf associates along with those with speech disabilities at the Bangalore Sortation Centre. This is India’s first Silent Sort Centre.
Silent stations 'delivering' impact in Mumbai
One of the most far-reaching impacts of Amazon’s commitment to the inclusion of persons with disability within its network is in the form of ‘Silent Delivery Stations’ – or last mile delivery stations that are entirely managed by deaf associates. The first such silent station was launched in Mumbai in January 2017, in partnership with Mirakle Couriers, a Delivery Service Partner that already employed a number of deaf individuals and those who are hard of hearing. Today, the dedicated Silent Delivery Station is completely managed and run by these associates. Seeing the success of the first such silent delivery station, Amazon in continued partnership with Mirakle Couriers opened its second silent station in in Mumbai in June 2018. These two stations have provided opportunities for more than 30 deaf delivery associates in the city.

Mirakle Couriers
Mirakle Couriers is a National Award winning courier agency that employs low-income deaf adults.
Mirakle Couriers was started by Dhruv Lakra, an alumnus Oxford University in 2010. He began to hire hearing-impaired because they are extremely good at map-reading and remembering roads and buildings because they are so visually inclined.
At Mirakle Couriers’ two distribution hubs in Mumbai’s historic southern district, the day begins at 8am with a flurry of silent conversation as the company’s 26 deaf couriers greet each other and divide among themselves the day’s deliveries — mostly ecommerce parcels delivered for Amazon.
For now, some heavier packages must be delivered by nine hearing delivery men on motorcycles: in Mumbai, where many drivers rely heavily on horns to announce their presence, deaf people were until last October barred from obtaining a driving license.
So the deaf couriers use the city’s bus network to reach their delivery patches, with each round normally lasting about eight hours. When problems crop up, they use WhatsApp to make a video call using sign language to three deaf female employees at the company’s headquarters.
The delivery men hand over parcels to recipients and collect their signatures without a word — an experience not hugely different from that found with other courier services, says Mirakle founder Dhruv Lakra, arguing that most customers tend not to take time to chat with FedEx or DHL couriers.
The couriers typically earn about Rs. 14,000 per month, putting their annual pay well above India’s per capita income of about Rs. 1,33,000.

In 2011, SAP started working with the Autism Society of India to choose candidates with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The company took advantage of the candidate’s photographic memory to perform complex tests, which would involve about 50 steps. When they were tested against regular engineers, it was found that the regular engineers were right on 80 percent of the occasions, while those with autism were right every time.
By 2020, SAP Aims to have 1% of its global workforce made up of autistic employees who can be fit into relevant IT roles.
