Indian Sign Language (ISL)

Indo-Pakistani Sign Language (IPSL) is the predominant sign language in the subcontinent of South Asia, used by at least 15 million deaf signers. As with many sign languages, it is difficult to estimate numbers with any certainty, as the Census of India does not list sign languages and most studies have focused on the north and urban areas. As of 2021, it is the most used sign language in the world, and Ethnologue ranks it as the 151st most "spoken" language in the world.

How to Talk in the Indian Sign Language

Inclusion through Indian Sign Language

One of the many ways through which we can drive disability inclusion is how we choose to converse with each other. Learning a new language is a great way to foster inclusive conversations among our peers. For us languages are not just a means of communication through words, locally or internationally but also non-verbal messages through the sign language. We invite you to join us as we learn the Indian Sign Language (ISL) which will in turn lead to deeper human connections amongst us.

Indiansignlanguage.org

Indiansignlanguage.org offers a huge collection of Indian Sign Language (ISL) signs. Each sign has an image, running video and threaded discussions. It is an ideal resource to use while you learn/teach Indian Sign Language.  Each sign has an image, running video and threaded discussions.  We are continually adding more signs and designing new services to empower the Deaf.

ISL Dictionary

"The basic aim of developing the ISL Dictionary is to remove communications barriers between the deaf and hearing communities as it is focused on providing more information in Indian sign language. Its aim is to give Deaf people the constitutional right as well as the opportunity of freedom of expression and also bringing them into the main stream of the society." - Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot, Hon'ble Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, 2018

Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC)

In the 2000s, the Indian deaf community advocated for an institute focused on ISL teaching and research. The 11th Five Year Plan (2007-2012) acknowledged that the needs of people with hearing disabilities had been relatively neglected and envisaged the development of a sign language research and training center, to promote and develop sign language and training of teachers and interpreters. The Finance Minister announced the setting up of ISLRTC in the Union Budget speech of 2010-11.

As a result, in 2011, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment approved the establishment of the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Center (ISLRTC) as an autonomous center of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Delhi. The foundation stone of the center was laid at IGNOU campus on 4th October, 2011

British Sign Language (BSL)

British Sign Language (BSL) is a sign language used in the United Kingdom (UK), and is the first or preferred language among the Deaf community in the UK. Based on the percentage of people who reported 'using British Sign Language at home' on the 2011 Scottish Census, the British Deaf Association estimates there are 151,000 BSL users in the UK, of which 87,000 are Deaf. People who are not deaf may also use BSL, as hearing relatives of deaf people, sign language interpreters or as a result of other contact with the British Deaf community. The language makes use of space and involves movement of the hands, body, face, and head.

SEXbaff!

SEXbaff!: Sex Education in Austrian sign language

Information and education is important for a self-determined and responsible attitude towards one's own sexuality. For deaf young people, this access is associated with major barriers. The Sex project, flabbergasted! is a first step to overcome these barriers and to make various topics of sex education in Austrian Sign Language accessible.

The project was implemented by equalizent in cooperation with experts from the field of sex education. We would like to thank the Austrian Society for Family Planning for their support and expertise. The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Health and Consumer Protection.
