Children worldwide has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), so it’s not surprising app stores are filled with products marketed specifically for them. Each year, developers and app creators release new autism apps. These apps are intended to support the autism community, focusing on the social, communication, emotional, language, and organizational needs of children with autism. Exposure to the right quality autism apps can help a child with autism in several ways. Specifically, high-quality apps can help children gain confidence and assist them in developing skills such as decision making, communication, social interaction, and finding the motivation to improve and learn. In this article, you will learn about some of the best autism apps for kids that are available today.

In 2022, the list of high-quality apps for kids with autism continues to grow. Whether you’re looking for an educational app or one that focuses on skill-building, the following apps all have one thing in common — they benefit children with autism, as well as their caregivers.

Support Your Children’s Development With Apps That Focus On Their Needs Kids with autism can benefit from assistive technology as it encourages independence, helps form social relationships, enables communication, and more. You can utilize it by downloading mobile apps that will empower your children and provide them with a fun and engaging learning environment. However, many apps available today were developed by people who don’t know much about learning disorders, so you need to beware of which apps you let your children use. The above list is a great place to start and learn more about what a useful autism app looks like. Though not all of them are free, I found the benefits they provide outweigh their subscription price. Most of the apps will also let you test their services at no cost to you with a trial — so you can make sure they’re really worth it!

Educational  App

How educational apps can help autistic children learn

Getting their attention – this can make it easier to teach children new skills

Letting them explore ideas, create things, complete tasks and learn through trial and error

Letting them practise new skills more often and consistently – for example, matching and sorting shapes

Helping them focus on and practise a new skill like sorting without being distracted by other children – for example, in a classroom.

Apps can help autistic children learn new skills, helping children apply these skills to everyday life. Children might need support with this part of their learning.

Many children on the autism spectrum are visual learners and rely heavily on visual cues to aid their learning.

This is a useful autism read and write app for teaching spelling to young learners with autism and other special educational needs.

Comparatives and superlatives are integral parts of our language that let us compare things (like “big-bigger-biggest”). The concept behind them can be tricky to grasp, but Buddy Bear is there to help children on the spectrum learn these difficult grammatical structures. Based on popular storybooks, the app features 5 simple stories that show Buddy Bear in different situations, like petting dogs or seeing stars. I enjoyed watching the bear interact with various objects as the narrator calmly described what was happening. At the end of a scene, your child will be asked to answer a question by choosing one of the answers displayed on the screen. As each storyline explores different descriptive vocabulary, your child won’t get bored following Buddy’s adventures.

Articulation Station

Articulation Station was created by a certified Speech Pathologist to address articulation disorders, when a child has an impaired ability to produce a specific sound(s) and always produces the same error sound in its place.

The app is based on the process of traditional articulation therapy, which focuses on giving the child specific motor instructions on how to make a target sound. The core of this process is to teach a child to produce a target sound through a sequence of activities, including listening to and identifying the difference between the target sound from the error sound, correcting the production of the target sound until it is produced correctly, and generalising the target sound.

This autism app enables practice at letter, word and sentence level to improve pronunciation and phonological awareness. Each word has 60 target words and all together Articulation Station Pro has over 1,000 target words. This autism read and write app enables easy scoring and data tracking.

InnerVoice Communication is an easy-to-use, and engaging communication tool that teaches speech, language, and social communication skills.

As a teacher of children on the Autism Spectrum with complex communication needs, I am constantly looking for the most appropriate form of Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) to use with the children at our school. InnerVoice Communication is one of an excellent AAC app. It is now a firm favourite with our young communicators, their families and our speech and language therapists. It is not as complex when compared with other AAC options during initial set-up and the use of multi-sensory strategies in combining visual and auditory stimulation is wonderful.

Bullying Prevention

Bullying happens more often than most parents realize: one in three kids has either bullied someone or been bullied themselves. Here are anti-bullying apps that you and your kids ought to download. They’re some of the best ones available, and they’re all free.

1. KnowBullying

Available at: Apple Appstore;

Google Play

The most important first step in any anti-bullying effort is to talk to your kids about what bullying is and how to prevent it. KnowBullying, developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is an award-winning app that explains the warning signs of bullying, offers advice on how to talk to your kids about bullying, and includes important strategies for preventing bullying for kids in different age groups (3-6, 7-12, and older.)

2. ReThink Stop Cyberbullying

Available at: Apple Appstore;

Google Play

Despite parents’ best efforts, kids often don’t realize when they’re about to bully someone. This is especially true with online messages. One way to ensure that potentially hurtful messages aren’t sent is to download Rethink – Stop Cyberbullying. Developed by a 13-year old girl who wanted to help fight cyberbullying, this app issues alerts such as “Would you like to re-word this? Remember, you are what you type!” when it detects hurtful language. This approach has been shown to stop kids from sending hurtful messages in the first place.

3. Take a Stand Together

Available at: Apple Appstore;

Google Play

When bullying does happen, how should kids respond? Take a Stand Together offers lots of helpful advice for dealing with different types of bullying. The app has interactive scenarios that make kids think about what they’d do if they were being bullied or witnessed others being bullied.

4. Bully Button

Available at: Apple Appstore;

Google Play

Sometimes, it’s not possible for kids to deal with bullying on their own. They might need to tell their parents about it and ask for help. A great bullying-alert app is Bully Button. This app lets kids surreptitiously record the bullying and quickly and effectively alert their parents. It shows kids’ exact locations and makes it easy for parents to offer advice on what to do in real-time.

5. Speak Up! For Someone

Available at: Apple Appstore;

Google Play

An essential lesson you can teach your kids is that bullying can happen to anyone and, if they witness it, they need to speak up rather than stay quiet. Speak Up! For Someone is just the right app for that. It lets kids record bullying that they witness and report it anonymously and securely to school officials
